Do you find macOS Mail balking at perfectly good Australian English and suggesting American spelling everywhere? Do you use Norwegian often in your emails, leaving the spelling and grammar checker baffled? Would you prefer your Mac not try to guess the language you are typing?
MacOS Mail employs your Mac's systemwide spelling checker. In addition to specifying one or more languages for it to check, you can pick variations for certain tongues—Brazilian versus European Portuguese, for example. Although the basics are the same, designating the macOS spell check language differs somewhat from the method used by its predecessor OS X.

Nov 05, 2018 Spell Check in Word/Office Macintosh 2016 Does Not Work My spell check in Word no longer recognizes obvious spelling errors. I have (a) rebooted and rebuilt the directory (with Disk Warrior); (b) checked and double checked the Custom Dictionaries; (c) turned spell. You can make the spelling and grammar checker ignore text. For example, say you insert some text from an informal email message that contains sentence fragments and slang terms, and you want the spelling and grammar checker to ignore all mistakes in this block of text. The OS X built-in spell check is great, but it is not complete. It often does not include technical terms or brand names. If you routinely use words that your Mac’s dictionary doesn’t contain, and don't want the hassle of adding them one at a time, it might be worth your while bulk adding a list of words. How can spell checking be turned off for a portion of a OneNote page? Select a block of text in your document that you want to disable for spell checking. Is a new contributor to this site. To pick the languages and dictionaries used to check the spelling in the emails you write using your Mac:
- Open System Preferences on your Mac.
- Select the Language & Region category. You'll see at least one language listed in the Preferred languages section of the screen that opens.
- Click the plus sign (+) that appears under the Preferred Languages section.
- Scroll through the list of available languages. Pay attention to language variants—Australian English is not the same as U.S. English, for example. Highlight a language and click Add.
- A pop-up asks you to clarify which of the languages listed in the Preferred Languages section is the one you want to use as your primary language. If you change the primary language, you'll need to restart your computer before it is recognized.
- Select any additional languages you want to add to the Preferred languages section.
- To remove a language, highlight it and click the minus sign (-) under the Preferred languages section.
- Drag and drop the languages in the Preferred languages screen to change their order. The first one in the list is designated as your primary language. However, Mac OS X can often pick the correct language for your mail from the text you type.
- Click the Keyboard Preferences button at the bottom of the Language & Region preferences screen.
- Select the Text tab.
- Place a checkmark in front of Correct spelling automatically.
- Select Automatic by Language from the Spelling drop-down menu to allow the Mac to choose the language to use. If you prefer to specify the language the Mac should use, select it from the drop-down menu.
- Close the Language & Region system preferences window to save the changes.

Another reason to use Despeller is because the spell check and the underlines drive you batty! I spell pretty well, thank you very much, and besides, I use TextEdit and Stickies for code, and no, I am not going to add every little thing to the dictionary. Get those little red lines outta my face!

I've been searching for a way to turn off the 'check spelling as you type' feature in iCal. It's on by default, and you can turn it off with a right-click, but it shows up again the next time you're editing an event. I could probably live without the feature system-wide, using Despeller, but those kinds of tools always make me a little nervous. Sure wish I could figure out the 'defaults write' command that would toggle off the default setting in iCal...

First, I know what your thinking. Then why didn't you fix it?

I'm guessing you don't know what I'm thinking: you misspelled 'your'. Those pesky red lines wouldn't have shown it, of course. ;)
Thanks for the hint!
I'm wondering about the wisdom of using always-on spell checking as a routine, simply because many users will get in the habit of ignoring the underlines. I write script and code, too, and I'm used to ignoring them. I'm also a champion speller, so it's not big problem, but I'm a quick, clumsy typist.
Have a good weekend.

The source code for TextEdit (or an abbreviated version) is included with the Developer Tools installation (part of the installer disc).
How about building that version? I'm sure there's a way to programmatically turn off spell check.

This won't stop your students from cheating.

TextEdit also supports ESC to get a list of possible completions from the spellcheck dictionary.
If I really wanted to keep students from using spell check, I'd move aside /System/Library/Services/AppleSpell.service, which disables spell checking completely. And also disable dictionary lookups by moving aside /Library/Dictionaries. I guess it all depends on how clever your students are.
